How to Add Groupon to Your Joomla Website

Putting Groupon on your website is effective because it utilizes Geo-Targeting.  If a viewer comes to your website, Groupon automatically detects the location of your visitor and displays ads relevant to their location.   For example, a viewer from Japan on your site will see a different Groupon ad than someone visiting from Greece.  So Groupon ads do convert well because it caters directly to your audience.

How to add Groupon to your Joomla website?  It’s easy.  I was recently searching through the Joomla Extensions directory and found some Groupon modules but they required a payment.  I was thinking, there has to be an easier and free way to do this.  I remembered a Joomla module that I could add custom HTML to any position on my website.  I found one for you and it’s totally free.  It’s called the “Mod HTML” by Dart Creations.

With Mod HTML you can add any HTML including javascripts to your Joomla website.   Although this post is about adding Groupon coupons to your website, you don’t have to limit yourself to just that, you can add any types of affiliate code.  You can add Google Adsense to your website without downloading another module.   You don’t even have to mess around with any code or change your existing template.

Assuming that you already have your Groupon affiliate code (if you don’t have one yet, go to step 9), here are the steps to add Groupon (or any affiliate ) code to your Joomla Website:

1.   Download the module – Mod HTML by Dart Creations.

2.  Go to your Joomla backend administrator.

3.  Install the Module from your Extensions Manager.

4.  Go to your Module Manager.

5.  Add a module, select the Mod HTML

6.  Change the title, position (wherever you want your Groupon ad to show on your website

7.  Insert your Groupon affiliate code.  Your code will look like this:

<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’http://groupon.com/javascripts/common/widget.js’></script><script type=’text/javascript’>new GRPN.Widget({“referral_code”:”uu16689362″}).render();</script>

8.  Save your module and refresh your site.

You should be able to see Groupon on your website now.   If you don’t have Groupon affiliate code yet, and want to get your own, see below:

9.  Go to Groupon.com

10.  Sign up to join their community.

11.  Get a referral code – it will look something like this :   http://www.groupon.com/r/uu16689362

12.  Go to the Groupon referral widget link at the bottom – Groupon.com/widget

13.  Enter in your referral code number at the bottom and click on “Get Code”.

14.  You will see code that looks like:

<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’http://groupon.com/javascripts/common/widget.js’></script><script type=’text/javascript’>new GRPN.Widget({“referral_code”:”uu16689362″}).render();</script>

15.  Paste that in the above Mod HTML module on your Joomla website.

Then that’s it.  The main points here are to download & install the Mod HTML, add the module to your Module Manager and paste the Groupon code.  This is simple, free and fast. At least that’s the way I like it.  Enjoy!    If you are interested in a Groupon clone template, creating your own Groupon website, or Daily Deal site, I recommend the Deals Plazza template by TemplatePlazza.  Click here to demo the template, or you can read my latest review on it – here.
