Change Joomla Frontpage Display

After installing Joomla the frontpage defaults to display articles in your content manager.  It only displays the articles that have the option “Show on frontpage = Yes”.  You don’t have to stick with this format, everything in Joomla can be manipulated or changed to whatever you need.  If you want the front page to show your contacts, or maybe show all articles from a specific category or section, use a wrapper or even display a photo gallery.

Here I will show you how to change the look of your front page display.

  1. Go to your Joomla Administrator Panel.
  2. Click on Menus, Main Menu *
  3. Click on “Home” (or your default menu item) to edit it.
  4. Under “Menu Type” you will see “Front Page Blog Layout”.  So you want to change this.
  5. Click on “Change Type” button.
  6. Click to select from here what you want to change the layout to.   If you select a Category/Section, you will be required to enter in the Joomla Category or Section name.  Usually blog layout is the best. You can play around with the list layout and see the differences.
  7. Save the Menu Item and refresh your Home page.

    1. Hi Kurian,
If you want 4 featured articles on your frontpage, no leading article, 4 articles in 2 columns – its:

      # of leading articles =0
      # of intro articles = 4
      # columns = 2
      # links = 0

      Hope that helps,
      Elaine

  1. I want 4 articles on my front page, no leading article, 10 articles in 2 columns. I did as Enzolina tells, but it only shows 7 articles. Is it something that you cant have or something I click wrong?

    1. Hi Romas,
How many articles in total did you want to display on your Joomla frontpage – including the 10 that you want to show in 2 columns? Because you said you want 4 articles on the front page and 10 articles in 2 columns which kind of contradicts itself. *** First of all make sure you published at least 14 articles. I will assume that you want to have 4 articles that are full width and 10 articles displaying in 2 columns. This is what you need to do:

      # of leading articles =4
      # of intro articles = 14
      # columns = 2
      # links = 0

      Hope that helps,
      Elaine

  2. Howdy are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and create my own. Do you need any html coding knowledge to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!

    1. Hi Elie,
Yes, I’m using WordPress platform for my website. I believe it is the best one out there in terms of blogging software as it is extremely SEO friendly and easily configured. WordPress is extremely powerful with multitude of plugins and themes you can install on top of it. You don’t need any HTML knowledge to create a WordPress blog except if you want to customize the look of your current theme. But for the average user, you do not need to know any HTML programming.
      Thanks for your visit,
