  1. Awesome info Elaine! How does FatCow’s quality of web hosting compared to HostGator’s? Are they reliable? Does BuddyPress keep up with the latest WordPress updates? How big a community could it theoretically handle – assuming hosting was scalable?

    Great site!

    1. I haven’t used HostGator before but know that Fatcow is pretty reliable. I haven’t had problems with them yet. BuddyPress is a plugin to WordPress platform so it keeps up to date and has a big user community. It can handle many users, you can check out buddy press.org for more information.

  2. Hi Elaine,
I can’t tell if you are legitimate or being paid for your advice. I was reading your article and about to look deeper until I read your #1 recommendation, to use Fatcow as webhost. I have used them and it was a big MISTAKE. Perhaps you are new to web development and do not have any experience with hosting. The only cases when someone would recommend Fatcow is when they are getting paid because it is well know to have possibly the worst customer service (CS), many server problems, as well as accounting and billing scams. They are part of an umbrella group that has a long list of web hosting companies. If you call CS or click for help via chat from their site, the CS rep will ask you how you arrived or reached them, and try to find out which hosting service you are using. If you say “by clicking on your site,” they will keep asking until you identify the specific company. Why wouldn’t they know how you got to their help and chat and which web hosting service you are using? When I told the sales rep I would go to another host, he asked which and then laughed at my reply because it happened to be one of their group companies. He told me that I would get the exact same CS people when calling. In addition, support by email is worthless; they will send you a copied reply that does not solve your problem. No one in web development would ever recommend this group unless they are working for them or being paid. If you are legitimate, I hope you will at least take a moment to test the support contact as I have mentioned and also read
Otherwise, you will be steering people in a terrible direction and advising them to do something that will be costly, frustrating and lots of problems. I now use an amazing web hosting service that is direct, straight-forward and solves problems will little effort. CS replies are specific to the issue and resolve them quickly. To prove that I’m not working for another company and simply putting down Fatcow, I will not even mention the name of the host I now use. If you are interested, contact me.

    1. Hi James,
Thank you for your comments. I do have websites hosted with Fatcow but have not experienced any problems so far. I have other sites hosted with Dreamhost, Bluehost and Tigertech. If you are not satisfied with Fatcow, I strongly recommend Tigertech as their support is top notch. I will take your comments seriously about Fatcow and going forward will recommend Tigertech web hosting instead.
      Thanks again for your visit,
      elaine
