Joomla 1.6 – Creating a Menu Item For Component

You just finished installing your Joomla 1.6 component and now you need to add it on your menu navigation.  Assigning the component to a menu item is easily done through the Joomla 1.6 administrator backend control panel.   Say for example you wanted to add the component under your the menu “About Joomla”.  Here is how to do it:

1.  Log in to your Joomla 1.6 adminstrator backend.

2.  Go to “Menus”, “About Joomla”, “Add New Menu Item”

3. Under Menu details:

  • Menu Item Type.  Click on “Select”.    Your component should be listed in the next window.
  • Menu Title.  Enter in what you want your menu title to be.
  • State = Published
  • Menu Location = “About Joomla”

After you save your menu item, refresh your site.  You should see your new menu item that links to the component you selected in step 3.    Done! If you have any issues, message me.

  1. are u kidding ??

i find menu item type for component for JOOMLA 1.6 when i make a new menu that redirect to component is nothing,, i can’t find it (it’s a bug of JOOMLA 1.6 that MENU ITEM TYPE for COMPONENT is missing)

please reply as soon as possible

    1. Hi Nitz,

After you install the Joomla component, go to the Menu Manager and add a new menu item. Once you click on “select” for menu type you should see your component name listed in the window that pops up. Select your component and continue filling in the information for your menu item. Save your menu item and refresh your site. The component menu item will show up in the menu where ever you put it.

If that doesn’t work then check that your component is installed properly.

      Hope that helps,
      Elaine

    2. Hi Nitz,

Sorry I misunderstood your problem. You were able to create the menu item for the component, now you are having problems with the component itself. Which component is it? Once again make sure the following:

      1. You have the component properly installed.
      2. The component is compatible with Joomla 1.6.
      3. You entered data/created forms/customized data for your component in the Component menu.
      4. The menu item is ‘Published’ and there are no ACL restrictions.

If you continue to have problems with your component, you can reinstall it or ask the component owner for help.

      Regards,
      Elaine

  2. Thanks Elaine for always being there, please can you put me through how i can put two sub-menus(USER ADMIN & APP MENU) under a tab in the MAIN MENU page, such that once a user/staff clicks the USER ADMIN tab he will be redirected to a login form. Please note that the index page of the site has a login form which directs registered user to the MAIN MENU page.

    Kind regards

  3. Hi,
In addition to my earlier comment, please note that the second login form is quite different from the one on the index page. The second is role based, i.e login is role based as functions allowed in the next page after successful login is relational to the user(admin, manager, others).

    Thanks

  4. Okay, so I’ve been having this issue, and I can not figure it out for the life of me. The one thing I can not do in Joomla 1.6 is add a menu item. Joomla hangs every time I try to save. It’s got to be a setting or something in Kodingen.

    1. Hi Adam,
Are you still having this problem? What type of menu are you trying to create? Are you trying to create a menu or menu item?
      Thanks for your visit,

  5. Hi,
You know in Joomla 1.5 there are a USER MENU, EXAMPLE PAGE ect. But in joomla 1.6 there aren’t could you tell me where can i create USER MENU, EXAMPLE PAGE.

    Thanks,
    Maland

    1. Hi Maland,
Is the User Menu an actual link on the nav bar? You will just create a new menu “USER MENU” and new menu item “EXAMPLE PAGE”. I don’t have Joomla 1.5 installed anymore, but is the USER MENU only available to registered users?
      Thanks for your visit,
      Elaine

  6. Hi Eliane,

    Thanks in Advance,
    Maland

  7. Hi Elaine,
Thanks for you help, and now I have got another question to ask you. The Queston is “How can i summit my website to Google? You know to make easy to search in Google.”
    Thanks For you help,
    Maland

  8. I am trying Joomla 1.7, have struck up in creating a MenuItem without linking to Article. Basically, i am using the Left Menu, and i have some 6 Menus which may have sub-menus or not. In these Six Menus, not all will be linked to Article. Actually the MenuItem with Sub-Menu when clicked, it should only expand the Sub-Menu Items and not to be linked with any article. Does anybody, have an idea how to do this ?
    Scenario:
    Menu1
    Menu2
    ..Sub-Menu21
    ..Sub-Menu22
    Menu3
    .
    .
    MenuN

In this, Menu2, when clicked, should expand its Sub-Menus, but it will not have a page to itself. How i am clear in the explanation. Pls suggest a solution ?

    Thanks,
    Krish

  9. +1 for Krish’s question. I’m curious too.

In the meantime, I use Art Wijmo Menu.
In its module Basic Options, you set ‘Parent menu item clickable’ to ‘no’ and problem’s solved.

  10. Well, as luck would have it, I just came across the solution to the unclickable parent menu item, without needing any 3rd-party modules.

Change the parent menu item’s type so that instead of pointing to an article, it points to an external URL.
On the Link field, just enter a single # character. Everything else remains the same.

Who would have thought it was so simple…

    1. Hi Terry,
I must have misunderstood the questions you guys were asking. Thanks for the clarification and also posting the solution to your menu problem. I will create a post and also mention your name.
      Thanks for your visit,
      Elaine

    2. This solution is not working for me, as i tried this, if i give the type as External URL and give # in the link, in the site, when i click the Menu Item, it is not expanding the Sub-Menus. So i ruled out this option. I have try your first option of Art Wijmo Menu. Anyway, thanks for your time and reply.

      Regards,
      Krish
