Joomla 1.6 – Disable New Account Registrations

With your new installation of Joomla 1.6, the login/register forms are automatically shown.  If you want to manually create your users and disable users to register or create their own accounts on your website you can do that easily in the backend.  User management has changed in Joomla 1.6, it’s no longer under the ‘Site’, it has it’s own Menu called “Users” .  To remove the register link on your Joomla 1 .6 site, here is how to do it:

Joomla 1.6/1.7 Disable User Registration
Joomla 1.6/1.7 Disable User Registration

1.  Login to your Joomla 1.6 Administrator backend.

2.  Click on ‘Users’, User Manager’. Click on the button on the right side  Options‘.

3.  Set ‘Allow User Registration’ = “No”

That’s it.  Save your options and refresh your site.  You will see in the login part of your screen, the Register link is no longer there.  To add it back you can go through the same channels and set ‘Allow User Registration’ = “Yes”.

If you enable user registration, there are so many features now you can control with Joomla 1.6.  Looking down at all the options, you can specify which default group the new user will be assigned to once logged into your Joomla website as a registered user, if the new user can activate their account themselves via email or if the admin has to approve all account creation, and you can also specify which user group a non registered viewer has access to.   Joomla 1.6 has so many New Features, so many things to look into and play with.
