Joomla 1.6 Help – How to Add an Article Link to Menu

Joomla 1.6 Help – If you need to link an article to the menu navigation this is relatively easy.  Assuming that you are using the basic installation of Joomla 1.6.3 you will already have a menu setup for you.  You will use the Menu Manager to create a new menu item to link to this article.  First you must have also have the article saved.

For example:

I want a link to my article ‘About Me”  to show up under the Main Menu.

Steps to accomplish this:

1.  Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.

2.  Click on ‘Menus’, ‘Main Menu’

3. In the Menu Manager Menu Items, click on the button ‘New’.

4.  Now you are in the Menu Manager: New Menu Item.

5.  Menu Item Type – Click on the ‘Select’ button.

6.  Menu Item Type = Single Article

7.  Menu Title = About Me

8.  Select Article  – Click on the ‘Select/Change’ button.

9.  This will open up a popup box displaying all the articles saved on your website.  You can choose any article in this list.    Select ‘AboutMe’.

10.  These are values that are already selected, but just make sure they are consistent with your needs:

  • Status = Published
  • Access = Published
  • Menu Location = Main Menu
  • Parent Item = Menu Item Root
  • Target Window = Parent
  • Default Page = No
  • Language = All
  • Template Style = Use Default

11.  Save the ‘About me’ menu item.

After you refresh your Joomla 1.6 website frontend, you will see the new ‘About Me’ article link under the Main Menu.  Click on the link in the menu it will open up the article you selected in step 9.  Look at the top of the article, there is a bunch of additional information about the article that you don’t necessarily want your users to see.  Such as:

  1. Elaine,

Since you are the only person who seems to really know how to use Joomla 1.7, I have two more questions.

I have created a menu item with two sub-menus. When I click on the main menu item, I get a pop-up with the two sub-menus showing. I would like to make it possible to click on either of the sub-menu items and have the articles associated with them open. How do I do that?

The other question is, I have a module within which I would like to place an article. I am not sure how to do that.

    Thanks,
    Bob

    2. Hi Bob,
I’ve created a post for one of your questions, how to add article to module “position” (I assume). The post is here.
I will create post for you for your other question later. Should be up by end of week.

  2. Hi Elaine,
I’m a brand new Joomla user after having coding with raw html many, many moons ago. I’m having an old dog / new trick episode.

I’ve set up a menu that shows a mouseover link of which is supposed to link to the article I’ve defined with the alias of ‘merchants’. But when I click on the link I get a 404 Error saying that URL can’t be found.

I’m sure I’m missing something obvious but I’m sick of playing dead. Can you throw me a bone without laughing too hard?

    Regards,
    John
