Joomla 1.6 Help – Creating categories in Joomla 1.6 is one of the fundamental elements you must learn. Categories create the structure in which your articles are organized and later viewed. You must have at least one category created before you can save an article. You can have multiple nested categories. I will show you how to create a parent and child (nested) category. For example:
I want to create:
parent category=Wordpress
Child (nested Category) = Wordpress Themes
Below are steps to do this in your Category Manager:
Create the Parent Category
1. Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.
2. Click on ‘Content’, ‘Category Manager’, ‘Add New Category’
3. Set the following values (I’m using my example above):
- Title = WordPress
- Parent = No Parent
- Status = Published
- Access = Public
- Description = This is the parent category named WordPress
4. Click on the button ‘Save & New’
Create the Child (Nested) Category
5. Set the following values (I’m using my example above):
- Title = Wordpress Themes
- Parent = WordPress
- Status = Published
- Access = Public
- Description = This is the nested category named Wordpress Themes
6. Click on ‘Save & Close’
That’s all there is to create a new category. It’s pretty simple. Now you can create articles and assign them to the categories you created. The only restriction with Joomla 1.6 articles is that you cannot assign them to multiple categories. BUT have no fear, there is an excellent Joomla extension that I highly recommend you install to overcome this obstacle.
