Joomla 1.6 – How to Unpublish a Menu

In Joomla 1.5 removing menus were simple, you would just go into the Menu Manager and unpublish the menu.  In Joomla 1.6 they have made it a little difficult to find.   Say for example in your Joomla 1.6 website you want to remove the menu ‘About Joomla’.   You also want to remove the menu items that display under that menu.

There are 4 menu items under About Joomla:
Getting Started
Using Joomla
The Joomla Project
The Joomla Community

There are 2 ways to remove or unpublish this menu.  One way is through the Joomla 1.6 Module Manager, the second is through the Joomla 1.6 Menu Manager.

1.  Module Manager:

  • Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator panel
  • Click on ‘Extensions’ , ‘Module Manager
  • Use the filter dropdown ‘Select Type’ = Menu
  • Edit the title = ‘About Joomla!’
  • Select ‘Published’ = ‘Unpublished’.

2.  Menu Manager:

  • Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator panel
  • Click on ‘Menus’, ‘Menu Manager’
  • Find the Title = ‘About Joomla’ and look on the far right column under ‘Modules Linked to the Menu’.
  • Click in that column only ‘About Joomla! (Public in position-7)
  • Another window will open and set ‘Published’ = ‘Unpublished’

Either option works.  After you make those changes and refresh your Joomla 1.6 website you will not see the ‘About Joomla’ menu anymore.  To show this menu again just follow the above steps and change ‘Published’ = published.

Thank you so much for this information. I posted on the Joomla forum and no one knew the answer. So I began googling AGAIN to see what I could find. My Joomla is 1.7, but this information for 1.6 worked the same.
