Joomla 1.6 – Remove “Home” Breadcrumbs on Frontpage

by Elaine on February 4, 2011

After you install Joomla 1.6 you will see a text in the content area “Home”.  This is actually a breadcrumbs area.  When you navigate to other pages or categories you will see the category links appended to the “Home”.  It’s basically a link map of all the pages you visited on your website.   Just like when you visit futureshop.com or bestbuy.com, you will see all the links you went through on the website to get to your current page.  Although helpful, it is not entirely necessary.

If you want to remove the “home” breadcrumbs from your Joomla 1.6 website, here is how to do it:

1.  Log in to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.

2.  Click on ‘Extensions’,’Module Manager’.

3.  Search for ‘Breadcrumbs’ module, edit it.

4.  Under the options, set “Show Home” = No

After you save the Breadcrumbs module and refresh your site, the breakcrumbs ie starting with  “Home” will be removed.   If you want to remove the whole breadcrumbs module, just find it in the Module Manager and unpublish it or delete it.

In my case this was not breadcrumbs – I had trashed that module. You may find the solution is to go into the Home menu item, select the Page Display Options section to the right, and then set Show Page Heading to No.

thank you Bobbles! I couldn’t find what this was and had already tried looking through breadcrumbs, article settings and all the modules.

Hi Elaine;
Trying to get rid of HOME on the main page, Joomla 1.7. Did everything to disable the breadcrumb and it still shows up. Is there a browser that will edit Html or something so I can inspect and edit Html? Google acts like it is editing, but won’t save the change.

Hi Chris,
Sorry you are having problems. Have you tried unpublishing the breadcrumb module as well? What template are you using?

Hi Elaine

Using Beez 20. Unpublished Breadcrumbs, turned off ‘you are here’ ‘home’ and ‘last’ special options, and the word HOME still appears on my main page. Really perplexing. I know I’m still missing some trigger. Can the breadcrumb element be edited and saved online? Really appreciate your time.

The ‘Bobbles’ solution worked for me straight away (on a Joomla 2.5.3 site), after getting rid of the Breadcrumbs didn’t get rid of ‘Home’, so thanks very much
