Joomla 1.6 – Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.

After reading all the problems with Joomla 1.6, I decided to give a new installation a shot.  It can’t be as bad as all the comments I’m seeing in the forums can it?  First of all my fantastico didn’t have the Joomla 1.6, so I had to download the file, upload to my server, uninstall the zip file.  After going through the first few installation screens I got my first error message on page 4 – Database –

Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the Database: Could not connect to MySQL.

I noticed that there was an extra Database type – MySQLi, but I kept it as that.   I resolved the error message by directly accessing my MySQL database management screen and creating a new MySQL database name and database user on my server.    I then entered the database name and user in the respective fields on page 4 and the error message was gone and I proceeded to page 5.

FYI: On page 5, remember to keep FTP Layer to “No” otherwise you will experience problems later.  If you are installing on a Windows Operating System, the FTP layer is not required.

  1. Thanks for the info!!! I spent days trying to get apache/mysql and php configured separately before I went the wampp route. Then I ran into the mysql connect problem you described. I created the user and database and everything worked great.

  2. Quick rooky question… running on a localhost, where do I find the “mysql database management screen’ you accessed to make the required changes?

Thanks in advance, as well as for the help already provided! =)

    1. Hi Raven,
I’m not too sure which webhosting you are using, but most MYSQL management screens are about the same. I created a post in my other website the-webhosting.com and I wrote about how to create a MySQL database. Sorry the site still looks like it’s under construction…well it still is. Here is the post – How to create mySQL database.
      THanks for your visit,
