Joomla 1.7 Tutorial – How to add Banners to your Joomla website

Banners ads are often used on websites for affiliate marketing.  Joomla 1.7 has a Banner component to manage your banner ads.   The Banner component is also great if you want to display rotating linkable images across your website.   This is not a photo gallery component, as there is no mass upload or image resize functionality.   The Banner component can manage and see stats on many things such as:

  • Start and end publishing date
  • Set maximum number of impressions per ad
  • See total number of impressions
  • See total number of clicks
  • Purchase Type
  • Track impressions
  • Track clicks
  • See the click-through rate percentage

To understand how to use the Banners, you first must understand the Banner component structure.  It is as follows.  First level is the Client, that can have many Categories and in each Category can have many Banners.   For example:

  • Client = Clothing Store
  • Category = Mens, Womens
  • Mens Banners = can display banners for men’s shirts, men’s pants, men’s shorts
  • Womens Banners = can display banners for women’s tops, women’s dresses, women’s skirts

So below I will show you how to create Banners and then how to add a Banner component to your Joomla website.    Overview:

*** I will use the example above and create banners for the women’s clothing department.  I’m using the Beez_20 template, I will put the banner in position-7.  Replace the information ( in italics ) that I put in with your own.

If you have multiple banners stored in the same category this banner module will display a banner either randomly or according to sequentially how they are stored in your Banner Component.   So that’s all there is to know about how to Create banners and adding a banner module to your Joomla website.

Hope that helps you,

Elaine

  1. great explanation, thanks! I use Joomla 1.7.3 and I would like to get the banner items appear horizontal instead of vertical. Can you help?

  2. I was reading your article and I would like to appreciate you for making it very simple and understandable. This article gives me a basic idea of Banner Manager in Joomla and it helped me a lot. Check following helpful link too….
It also explained very well about banner manager in joomla.

  3. The only thing I don’t understand here (and maybe it will become clear as I get all banner images uploaded) is how, if I choose a single client that all banners within a category will rotate. I need all banners from all clients in a category to rotate in the module. Will that still happen, or do they all have to be labeled with the same client name as well? This is a bit confusing! Thanks!

    1. Hi SS,
You are right. The banner module will automatically rotate through all the banners you created in the Banner component. The rotation is dependent on the setting you chose in the Banner module for – ‘Randomise’.

      See post here #6 – http://www.cmsmind.com/joomla-2-5-tutorial-how-to-add-banners-to-website/

If Sticky, Ordering = Means it will cycle through all your banners in that category in order that you created them. (Or in sequential order)
If Stick, Randomise = Means it will cycle through all your banners in a random fashion. Will not adhere to what order you have placed them in the component.

      Hope that helps,
      Elaine.

  4. Actually, it doesn’t seem to matter…having changed the info in the established modules exactly as explained here, I now have NO banner images showing. I don’t even know how to ask what is wrong!

  5. I have some problems with my Banners.

With two different affiliate-banners I want them to appear in different locations on my site- they come together.

I created to different banners in the “banner-module). Then I go to module manager and create one module for each banner. When I publish them they appear at the same place.

How can I put different banners on different position on my page?

    Hope you understood my problem

    Best regards
Jørgen (sorry for my poor english)
