Joomla 1.7 Help – How to Display the Article Publish Date

Joomla 1.7 Help – Article Publish Date is not Showing Even though Changed Article Settings

There are 3 places where you can customize the display of the Article Details to show such information as the Category name, Author Name, Create Date, Modify Date, Publish Date, Voting, Print Icon, Email Icon, Number of Hits, and more.  Some of this information is useful to your visitors such as the publish date which you may chose to remain displayed while others remain hidden.    The three places where you can modify the Article parameters are in:

1.  Menus.  Displays article options as stated in the Global parameters (#2) unless otherwise specified.

2. Article Manager Options, commonly referred to as the Global parameters.  Sets the article display parameters for all articles or article menu items if not set explicitly.

3.  Article.  Displays article options as stated in the Global parameters (#2) unless otherwise specified.

Remember that displaying articles in your Menus and opening an Article are 2 different actions.  Therefore modifying Menu Article Options does not reflect how the article will be displayed once opened in full form.  To keep consistency in your Joomla website I do not recommend modifying Article options directly in the Menu or individual articles unless absolutely necessary.  It’s best practice to make modifications in the Article Options so the Menus and Individual Articles will look the same.  If your Article Details are not being displayed, I would check in all 3 locations to make sure your article options are not conflicting with each other.  Below I will show you where to find these Article Options:

1.  Menus Menu Manager

This is if you selected an Article related Menu Item Type such as Achived Articles, Single Article, List all Categories, Category Blog, Category List, or featured articles.

  • Login to your Joomla 1.7 Administrator panel
  • Click on Menus, Your Menu
  • Click on your Menu Item
  • See on the right – Article Options
  • Set the following value:
    • Show Publish Date = Either Global or Show
  • Click on Save & Close

2. Article Manager Options – Global Options

Joomla 1.7 - Article Manager Global Options
Joomla 1.7 - Article Manager Global Options
  • Click  on Content, Article Manager
  • On the right, see the button ‘Options’
  • Select the ‘Articles’ tab
  • Set the following value:
    • Show Publish Date = Show
  • Click on Save & Close

3.  Article in Article Manager

Joomla 1.7 Article Manager Edit Article Article Details
Joomla 1.7 Article Manager Edit Article - Article Details
  • Click on Content, Article Manager
  • Select the article you want to edit
  • See on the right ‘Article Options’
  • Set the following value:
    • Show Publish Date = Show or Gobal
  • Click on Save & Close

Now refresh your Joomla 1.7 website and your article publish date will be displayed.  You can do the same for any article details you want to display.

Thanks,

Elaine

  1. Hello,

I have a question. How can I do to remove the word “Details”? I do not want it to show, I only want the publish date to show up.

    Thank you so much

  2. Hi,

my problem is the template. Using my “old” 1.7 compatible template “neo” the modified date will not be displayed. All 3 parameters are set correct. Than i installed another template the modified date is displayed now. Do you have any idea what to do now?

  3. Hello
Regarding article`s details, how is it possible to manage the space between the Title of the article and all the article`s details. There is at 30px white space between the 2 and i would like to get rid of it and place the “details” on the same line than print-email icon

  4. I appreciate your article, still it leaves me with some question marks over my head.

Let’s say I would like to hide articles votes and icons from the category blog view while I’d like to show them once I click on the article and see it in full. How would you do it?

    1. Hi Fererico,
You can override the article display options in the menu item to hide article details and leave the article display options to show the votes etc in the article manager global options.
Let me know if you have further questions.
      Thanks for your visit,
      elaine

      1. Thanks for your help Elaine, I just did it and it works as you stated. By the way: is there any way to make it the default behaviour instead of selecting these options for each article?

I mean: category blog views are now set to use global setting (which hides votes, cat name, etc) while articles simply show those fields by hand selecting them from the article view.

My idea would be to show those fields from the global settings and hide them from the menu page (category blog views of course) but in this case… the menu view setup would override the article one leaving me with hidden fields that I would rather show.

        Thanks,
        Federico

        1. Hi Federico,

Yes, I don’t think I was clear in my last response to you (was in a rush).

Your Menu Item has ‘Article options’ where you can select to hide article display options. Set your category blog view to hide article options here.

For all other articles, you don’t have to individually set it. Use the global Article Manager options to set it to globally show. Your article details will show by default.

In this case, Category blog article details will hide, and when you open an article, the display options will show.

          Hope that helps you,
          elaine

          1. Hello once again Elaine,

i knew about this feature but I never been able to let it work the way you indicated.

            What I just did:
            – changed my articles options to “use global”;
            – changed the category blog menu to have some fields (votes, cats, author) as “hidden” in the “article option”
            – went to “content->articles manager” and on the options popup I selected to show the fields (votes, cats, author) from the “articles” tab.

The results are different from what you stated: the menu calling the category blog page correctly hides the fields as requested; once I click on an article from the same category blog page… the fields are still hidden.

I had (and still have) similar issues since version 1.5 and never really solved them.

            Any clue?

  5. thanks for the article. just one question:
when i enable the ARTICLE VOTING, it appears straight after the article title. is it not possible to bring the voting thing at the bottom of the article?

    thnks
