by Elaine on December 17, 2011

If you have errors with Joomla 1.7 Components or Modules, you can either choose to delete the Component or Module and search for another, or you can choose to debug your website.   Most people want to debug their site to see if there are language translation errors, SQL errors or file permission errors.   Below I will show you how to turn on the debugger for Joomla 1.7.

Joomla 1.7 - Enable Debug Mode

  1. Login to your Joomla 1.7 administrator backend
  2. Click on ‘Site’, ‘Global Configuration’
  3. Click on the ‘System’ tab
  4. Under ‘Debug Settings‘, set:
    • Debug System = Yes
  5. Click on ‘Save & Close’
Go to your Joomla 1.7 website frontend and refresh your website.  You will see the diagnostic and debug information at the bottom of the website.  The debug module position is typically placed at the bottom of the template.

Once you are complete with debugging your Joomla website, it is best to turn off the debugging information as it reveals intimate details of the inner workings of your Joomla website.  You do not want to disclose this information as it will make your website vulnerable to hackers.  You can turn off debugging by the following steps below:
