Joomla 2.5 Featured Articles Not Sorting Properly

Joomla 2.5 Tutorials – I created some articles or added more articles to the frontpage of my Joomla 2.5 website and was wondering why the Featured Articles were not sorting according to how they were displayed numerically in the Featured Article Manager.    See my screenshots below.

Joomla 2.5 Backend featured articles Manager

In my Joomla 2.5 Administrator Backend featured articles Manager it shows:

  • Administrator Components – Ordering = 1
  • Joomla! – Ordering = 2
  • Beginners – Ordering = 3
  • Upgraders – Ordering = 4
  • Professionals – Ordering = 5

But on the Joomla 2.5 Frontend of my website, the featured articles were sorting in a different order:

  • Joomla! – Ordering = 1
  • Beginners – Ordering = 2
  • Upgraders – Ordering = 3
  • Professionals – Ordering = 4
  • Administrator Components  – Ordering = 5

I was able to find the reason behind the problem, Joomla was sorting on the category name first.  So the fix is to remove the Category sorting.  Below is how I fixed it in 2 easy steps.  Now my Joomla 2.5 frontend articles are sorted in the order they are displayed in the Featured Articles Manager.  Below is an overview of the steps:

1. Joomla 2.5 - Click on Article Manager

1.  Access your Article Manager Options

Article Manager options is where you manage all the global options of your articles and categories.  These options are applied to all articles and categories created in your Joomla site if the attribute was not otherwise set in the menu or category.  By default, new menus and categories use the global settings in the Article Manager Options.

  • Login to your Joomla 2.5 Administrator backend
  • Click on ‘Content’, ‘Article Manager’
  • Click on the ‘Options’ button on the top right

2. Joomla 2.5 - Shared Options Set No Category Order

2.  Change the Category Order in Shared Options

  • In the ‘Article Manager Options’ window, switch to the ‘Shared Options’ tab
  • Set the following value:
    • Category Order = No Order
  • Click on ‘Save & Close’

Now you can refresh your Joomla 2.5 website and your Featured Articles will sort as you see them sorted in the Featured Articles Manager.

Thanks,

Elaine

Thank You Elaine! I was chasing my tail on this issue for a day. I thought it was a bug in Joomla. Your category fix arranged my joomla home page the way I wanted it.

I migrated my site from 1.5 to 2.5 and couldn’t figure this out and had resorted to only showing featured articles from one category. Seems like a silly default option. The new 2.5 settings are so convoluted with featured article sort options being set in at least 3 completely different places.
    Thanks a lot!

      Hi Row1,
I agree with you. The new Joomla 2.5 has more options to contend with which makes customizing your Joomla site much harder. I’m glad you were able to resolve your issue. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I will try my best to help.

I’m still having trouble!! I tried this but here is the real issue–the item that was originally #1 in the order is suddenly labeled #2–as is another item. The item that was originally #3 is now labeled #4–as is another item. This has caused my top and middle items in the home page to disappear completely. How do I get them back? I signed out for a couple of hours and came back to this mess!!!
