Joomla 2.5 – How to Uninstall Joomla Template

Joomla 2.5 – How to Uninstall / Delete a Joomla 2.5 Template

While going through the most obvious way of Uninstalling a Joomla 2.5 template in the Template Manager, I got an error message that said:

Cannot delete last style of a template

I really have no idea what this error message means.  But I managed to uninstall and delete my Joomla Template.  Below is an overview of what I did:

1.  Make sure template is not the default site template in the Template Manager

Your site must have a default template assigned to it, so you must make sure that the template you want to delete is not assigned as a default.  If it is, then you must select another template to be the default site template.  This is easily done in the template manager:

  • Login to Joomla 2.5 Administrator Panel
  • Click on ‘Extensions‘ , ‘Template Manager’
  • Select any site template, for example – Beez2 – Default
  • Click on the ‘Make Default‘ button along the top right
  • You will see an orange star appear beside Beez2 – Default and under the column ‘Default’

2.  Manage Extensions in the Extensions Manager

Manage Extensions is where you manage – uninstall, edit any component, module, language, plugin, or template you installed in your Joomla 2.5 website.

  • Click on ‘Extensions’, ‘ Extensions Manager’
  • Switch to the ‘Manage‘ tab

3.  Select and Uninstall Template

Now you can select the Joomla 2.5 template to uninstall.  Here you will uninstall the Joomla 2.5 template.  For example I’m uninstalling ‘artqueenblack’ template.

  • Use the checkbox to select the template to uninstall
  • Click on ‘Uninstall‘ button at the top right

4.  Done and Joomla template Deleted

Joomla 2.5 - Uninstall Template Successful
4. Joomla 2.5 - Uninstall Template Successful

After you are done with uninstalling the template in the Extensions Manager, the template is now successfully deleted from your site.  You can check all the below locations and you will not find any reference to the deleted template:

  • Extensions Manager – Manager
  • Template Manager – Site
  • Template Manager – Templates
  • Module Manager – Template

That’s it.  Hope this helped you.
