Joomla 2.5 Tutorial – How to Install & Activate New Template in Joomla 2.5

Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager
1. Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager

Joomla 2.5 Tutorial – The process is the same as previous Joomla versions on how to install and activate a new Joomla template.  The only tricky part of installing a Joomla template is to make sure the ZIP file you download ONLY contains the folder of your new template.    If the Joomla Template installer cannot find the template.xml file, it will cause your installer to error out.  But I’ll save that for another tutorial.

To Install & Activate your new Joomla 2.5 template only requires 3 easy steps.  Overview of what you need to do:

Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager Installer
1. Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager Installer

1.  Access the Joomla 2.5 Extensions Manager Installer

The Joomla 2.5 Extension Manager manages all the updates, database, warnings and installs of any plugins, templates, modules, Components, and languages.

  • Login to your Joomla 2.5 Administrator panel
  • Click on ‘Extensions’, ‘Extensions Manager’
  • Click on the ‘Install’ tab
Joomla 2.5 - Choose Template ZIP file
2. Joomla 2.5 - Choose Template ZIP file

2.  Select the new Joomla 2.5 Template ZIP file

In the install tab, you will select the template ZIP file.  Do NOT unzip the contents.  The Joomla 2.5 installer will ONLY accept ZIP files.

  • Under ‘Upload Package File’, click on ‘Choose File’
  • Select the Template ZIP file you downloaded from your computer
  • Click  on ‘Upload & Install’
  • You will see a message that says:
Installing Template was successful
Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager Installation Successful
2. Joomla 2.5 - Extensions Manager Installation Successful
Joomla 2.5 - Template Manager
3. Joomla 2.5 - Template Manager

3.  Activate Joomla 2.5 Template in Template Manager

Now that you installed/uploaded your new Joomla 2.5 template, you still need to activate the template to be the default site template.  This is done in the Template Manager.

  • Click on ‘Extensions’, ‘Template Manager’
  • Click the ‘Styles’ tab
  • Use the Checkbox to select your new Template Name
  • Click on the big star on the top right ‘Make Default’
Joomla 2.5 - Activate new Joomla 2.5 Template
3. Joomla 2.5 - Activate new Joomla 2.5 Template
  • You will see a message that says:

Default style successfully set.

That’s it.  Refresh your Joomla 2.5 website at the frontend and you should see a new layout for your Joomla website.

Hope that helps,

Elaine

    Hello Elaine

I have read your tutorials with great interest and have uploaded new templates into Joomla 2.5 but the lonly templates that appear to be stable are the default ones – Beez 20 and parks default. Any other template I load goes haywire and the alignment is all over the place. How can I stop this from happening? I have enclosed the URL of the site I am building – I have currently modified Beez 20 but I would like to use other templates as well.
