Joomla 1.6 – How to Install Joomla Template

I realized that I wrote about how to uninstall a Joomla 1.6 template, how to delete a Joomla 1.6 template, how to activate a Joomla 1.6 template but I didn’t write about how to install a Joomla 1.6 template.    To install a Joomla 1.6 template is pretty easy, I just overlooked it because some Joomla 1.6 templates now are all quick installs.

When you download your Joomla 1.6 template it is in zipped format.  I would unzip the file because sometimes the developer buries all the template files down in subdirectories.   Go to the subfolder that contains all the template information.  Your subfolder should contain for example index.php, config, plugins, Components, modules, and admin folders.  Zip that subfolder up and name it for example template123.zip.

Below are instructions how to install this template to your Joomla 1.6 website.

1.  Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.

2.  Click on Extensions, Extensions Manager

3. Click on the Package File box and select the template123.zip file.  Click on ‘Upload and Install’ button.

After successfully installing your Joomla 1.6 template you can follow the next post on how to Activate your Joomla 1.6 template.  Click here to see it.

Hope that helps,

Elaine

  1. how on earth do I upload a Joomla 1.6. template onto a site hosted by GoDaddy? I am way too lod to understand any of this. I am a member of a non profit club, we need this site up… I am by far the most computer savy…

I have downloaded the templates to my desktop and extracted them and I am totally lost staring at the GoDaddy FTP File Manager page when I click on the joomla file, and then upload, and the window opens and I go to browse it says selection canceled

  2. Hi! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to help us with this. I’ve installed templates before no problem. But I have one that has PHP inside the zipped file. How is this any different? Do I have to install that directly on the server myself through FTP or is this a Joomla back end procedure? Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Albert,
I”m not too sure what you mean by it has php in the file. Are you sure this is Joomla template? What errors did you get when you tried to install the template? There are no additional procedures that need to be done after you install the template in the template manager. Let me know how it goes.
      Thanks for your visit,
