Joomla 1.6 – Removing/Uninstalling a Template

There are so many templates you can download for Joomla 1.6, you can get carried away.  I know I had tons of Joomla Templates installed at one time.   Most of these templates were not being used so I wanted to remove some.  To uninstall and delete templates from your Joomla site, follow these steps:

1.  Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.

2.  Go to ‘Extensions’,’Template Manager

3.  Use the checkbox to select the Joomla template(S) you want to remove.

4.  Click on ‘Delete’.

You better be careful, because this way totally deletes your Joomla 1.6 template from your website.     If you want to just uninstall your template you can use the Extensions Manager and uninstall the template.

1.  Go to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.

2.  Click on ‘Extensions’, ‘Manager’ tab, ‘Select Type’ = ‘Template

3. Click on ‘Uninstall‘.

After that your template should be successfully uninstalled.  If you get an error message that says:

Template Uninstall: Cannot remove default template.

Error uninstalling template.

This simply means that you are trying to uninstall a template that you are currently using as either your default site or administrator template.   Change your site or administrator template in the Template Manager and then you will be able to uninstall it.
