Template Install: Another template is already using directory

by Elaine on June 3, 2010

Joomla requires unique directories for each Joomla template you install.   If you try to install your Joomla template and get the error message below, there can be a couple reasons.

Template Install: Another template is already using directory ‘Joomla/templates/template_name’

Reasons for the Error Message:

  1. The Joomla template could be already installed.
  2. The Joomla Template was installed at one point but not properly uninstalled.

Either way you will have to remove this Joomla Template directory from your system before you can proceed to upload/install your template.  Follow the directions to Uninstall Joomla Template

How to Uninstall Joomla Template:

  1. Go to your Joomla Administrator Panel
  2. Click on Extensions, Install/Uninstall
  3. Switch to the Templates tab
  4. Use the checkbox to select the template you want to remove or uninstall
  5. Click Uninstall

Try to install your Joomla template again.  If you continue to have the same error message, you will have to ftp into your Joomla backend and remove the TemplateName Directory.   Only try this if you know what you are doing.

  1. Log into your FTP manager
  2. Find the directory associated with that template name
  3. Go to directory joomla/templates/
  4. remove the directory template_name

That will totally remove the old template files from your site and you should be able to install your new Joomla Template.  If you have any questions, leave me a message and I will respond.

I followed your instructions but, I can delete the contants of the file but not the file itself. I am still getting the same message when I attempt to upload. Now what can I do?
