Joomla 1.6 – What are the Template module positions?

In Joomla 1.5 you can see template module positions easily by just typing ?tp=1 following the URL path.  For example – http://www.domainname.com/?tp=1 will enable you to see all the template module positions of your active template.

In Joomla 1.6 this is slightly different to provide a little more security to your templates.    This little trick is handy since some Joomla template providers do not provide the template module map and makes it hard to figure out where your modules will end up when you publish them on your website.   You don’t have to play the guessing game anymore.   For example if you wanted to find out what are the module positions for Beez_20, here is how to do it:

1.  Login to your Joomla 1.6 Administrator backend.

2.  Click on ‘Extensions‘, ‘Template Manager’, go to the right hand side and click on the button ‘Options‘.

3.  Under the Template tab, Global configurations for Templates, set ‘Preview Module Postions’ = “Enabled”

4.  Save the Template Manager options.

5.  Now in your URL at the top you can append the ?tp=1.  for example http://www.yourdomain.com/?tp=1.

So that’s it.  After you press <enter> you should see the template module positions.   To turn off the template module positions you can follow through the same path and under the Template Manager Options, Template tab, Global configurations for Templates, set ‘Preview Module Postions’ = “Disabled”.
