Joomla Remove index.php From URL

by Elaine on October 29, 2009

I’ve seen many Joomla 1.5 websites and including my own that attached index.php in search engine friendly url’s.  You can look through some of the homepages for some of the extension sites for Joomla and you’ll find some sites still have the index.php still attached to their links too.  For example this is what your default links look like:

These links are annoying and definitely not search engine friendly.  So the steps below will help you and also helped me fix this problem.  The new url looks like:

Here are a few simple steps to remove index.php from your Joomla 1.5 URL:

  1. In Global Configuration (Site, Gobal Configuration), set the SEO Setting “Use Apache mod_rewrite” = Yes.
  2. Go to the backend/file manager of your Joomla and rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess.  For example my htaccess.txt file would be in my “test” directory.
  3. Watch the video.

The next step is to remove the word component from your urls.   You can find out how to do that here.
