Flag Inappropriate Comments – Free WordPress plugin

WordPress plugin on How to Allow Users to Flag and Report Inapproriate Comments in your Wordpress website.  This concept is similar to flagging inappropriate videos in YouTube, flagging inapproriate comments in Facebook, or flagging inapproriate images in instagram.  You can easily allow your users to flag inappropriate comments in your Wordpress website with a free WordPress plugin called ‘Safe Report Comments’.   After a set threshold is reached the comment is put into moderation where the you can decide whether you want to approve the comment or not. If the comment is approved, it will not be auto-moderated again but will continue to count the number of flags it receives.  You will see a message below the comments that says “Report Comment”.

Overview of How to  Use ‘Safe Report Comments’ WordPress Plugin

  1. Install Free WordPress Plugin ‘ Safe Report Comments’
  2. Activate WordPress Plugin ‘Safe Report Comments’
  3. Go to WordPress Plugin Settings
  4. Turn on the Comment Flagging
  5. Set the Flagging Threshold
  6. See on Frontend the Comment ‘Report Comment’
  7. See on the Frontend the Comment Flagged
  8. Monitor Comment Abuse Report

Steps:

1.  Install Free WordPress Plugin ‘ Safe Report Comments’

Search for the free WordPress plugin in the WordPress plugin directory.

  • Login to your WordPress administrator
  • Click on ‘Plugins’, ‘Add New’
  • Search for ‘Safe Report Comments’
  • Click on ‘Install Now

2.  Activate WordPress Plugin ‘Safe Report Comments’

Before you can use the WordPress plugin, you must activate it.

  • Click on ‘Plugins’, ‘Installed Plugins’
  • Search for ‘Safe Report Comments’
  • Click on ‘Activate

3.  Go to WordPress Plugin Settings

Safe Report Comment settings are set in the discussion area where the other comment settings are.

  • Click on ‘Settings’, ‘Discussion

4.  Turn on the Comment Flagging

Enable the comment flagging then you can set the flag threshold.  Scroll down the comment settings and you should see this the screenshot below.

  • In the Discussion Settings, check the box:
    • Allow comment flagging – Allow your visitors to flag a comment as inappropriate.
  • Click on ‘Save’

5.  Set the Flagging Threshold

After you save the Discussion Settings, now you can set the Flagging Threshold.  I set mine to 3.  So if the comment receives more than 3 flags then the comment goes from approved to pending my moderation.

  • Set Flagging Threshold = 3
  • This is Amount of user reports needed to send a comment into moderation
  • Click on ‘Save’

6.  See on Frontend the Comment ‘Report Comment’

Now if you go to a post comment, you will see a link that says ‘Report Comment’.  This is visible to everyone so now anyone can moderate your comments and flag them if they are inappropriate.

  • Go to your WordPress Frontend and view a post that has comments
  • You will see a link below that says ‘Report Comment

7.  See on the Frontend the Comment Flagged

Once a user flags the comment as inappropriate, they will immediately see a message that says:

Thank you for your feedback.  We will look into it.

When users flag a comment as inappropriate, it will increase the count in the ‘Reported’ comment monitor.  You will see where the comments are monitored in the next step.

8.  Monitor Comment Abuse Report

You can monitor the comment abuse report in the Comments section.  There is another column added to the comments which only you can see.  No one else can see how many times this comment was reported as inappropriate.

  • Go back to your WordPress Administrator
  • Click on ‘Comments’
  • See the new column on the right ‘Reported
  • This is the column where you will see how many times this comment was reported as inappropriate
