Joomla 1.6 Error – You are not permitted to use that link to directly access that page

by Elaine on June 28, 2011

Joomla 1.6 Help – Joomla 1.6 has a new security feature that restricts articles to be edited by one user at a time.   This is a great feature if you have a content based website with multiple collaborators.  You do not want 2 people editing the same file at the same time.

If in any case, the article is opened and not closed correctly – ie Did not use the buttons on the top to close the article then the article may remain locked by that user.  This article will remain locked until the administrator unlocks these articles.   In the meantime, if you try to edit these articles you will get an error message that says:

You are not permitted to use that link to directly access that page

To fix this, you will need to ‘Check-in’ locked items.  There are 2 ways to check in your locked items

Below I will show you how to use both.

1.  Site Manager to ‘Check-in’ locked items

  • Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.
  • Click on ‘Site’, ‘Maintenance’, ‘Global Check-in’
  • Use the checkbox to select all the items you want to check-in
  • Click on the ‘Check-in’ button along the top.

2.  Content Manager/Article Manager to ‘Check-in’ locked items

  • Login to your Joomla 1.6 administrator backend.
  • Click on ‘Content’, ‘Article Manager’
  • Use the checkbox to select the Articles you are having problems editing
  • Click on ‘Check-in’ button along the top

After you do either you will get a success message saying:

## article successfully checked in

You will then be able to edit your articles without any error messages.

Thanks,

Hi
Thanks for this article, I followed your advice, and did a global check in
However the message keeps coming up. I have since deleted the article (a contact in this case) that it referred to, but it still happens
